MALTA-Carl Duane Kaasa fell asleep in death on July 3rd, 2017 at age 87.

    The family will receive friends at 7:00 P.M., Friday, July 14 at the Kirkwood Funeral Home. Military Graveside services will be held at the Malta Cemetery on Saturday, July 15th, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Everyone is invited to the V.F.W. Club for lunch with the family following the graveside.     Carl Duane Kaasa, was born at the family home located North of Saco, Montana to John Alfred and Mabel Kaasa on February 18, 1930. He lived in the Saco area until he moved to the Kaasa Ranch at Bowdoin in the 1940s. He graduated from Saco High School and began serving in the Korean War on June 7, 1951. He was honorably discharged on May 20, 1953 and had earned a Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars.

    He began working for Phillips County Road Department on July 15th, 1954 as an operator and later as foreman. Nearly two years later, he married Sylvia Zenith Schwarz on July 7, 1956 and they were blessed with four children, whom his 38 years of steady employment served to provide for. He retired from the PC Road Dept. on September 25th 1992.

    Carl had a great love for and spent a large portion of his lifetime hunting, fishing & camping with friends and family. He trained his sons well to be skilled at these sports and all four of his children developed a love for spending time in the outdoors with their dad. He also was an excellent gardener and generously shared the produce he grew. He enjoyed woodworking, was involved with Walleyes Unlimited, and was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, John Alfred and Mabel Kaasa; three brothers: John Kaasa, Merle Kaasa and Ozzie Kaasa; and two sisters: Gusty Chapman and Alice Dancer. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Ferrell.

    Carl is survived by Sylvia and their four children Carolyn Ferrell, Geraldine Petersen, David (Dawn) Kaasa and Dale Kaasa; one brother Art (Joan) Kaasa, and one sister, Mary Jane Ketchum; Eleven grandchildren: Lisa, Sarah, Sandra, Eric, Sam, Jennifer, Amy, Elizabeth, Azalea, Tristen and Aidan. Seven great grandchildren: Rylan, Ireland, Alana, Cassius, Elin, Acacia and Evita. As well as his long-time friend and neighbor Joyce.
