Dick was born in Rochester, MN on May
18, 1931 to Stanley and Clara (Ulness) McNamara. He grew
up in Dodson and was a star football, basketball and track
performer for the Coyotes. Dick was a Korean War veteran proudly
serving in the US Navy from 1950-54. He was stationed in Alaska,
Hawaii and Japan and was the flight engineer on a P2V “Sub
Hunter”. After returning from the war he married his high
school sweetheart Lewellyn Boos on January 29th, 1955
at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Malta. They made their
home in Malta where Dick worked in the sheriff’s department as a
Deputy and Undersheriff for over 10 years. In 1968 he purchased
the Malta Transfer and Storage and operated it for over 20
years. He then worked various jobs which included driving truck,
working for Mendel Flying Service and as a school bus driver.
He retired in the late 1990s.
Dick was a lifetime member of the
VFW, was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, was a
member of the Knights of Columbus - Fourth Degree, served a term
on the Malta School Board and was on the Zortman Water and Sewer
Board for many years.
Dick enjoyed spending time with his
family at their cabin in Zortman – often saying that “we’d go
south for the summer and north for the winter”. He took
his family on many adventures in the mountains in his 1948
Willy’s Jeep. All his kids and many of his grandkids learned to
drive in the Jeep. Dick was an avid reader and loved a
good game of Pinochle or Wahoo.
He is survived by his wife of 63
years Lewellyn, sons Dale (Tammy), Mike (Beth), daughter Debbie
(Nick), sister Doris Holman, sisters-in-law Karen Boos, Lillian
Boos, Mary Lavey, brother-in-law Gene Lavey, 8 grandkids and 9
great grandkids.
