Sylvia was born September 10th, 1940 in Malta MT, the oldest child to Ben Schwarz and Dorothy (Hoffman) Baum. She married Carl Kaasa July 7, 1956 and together they raised their four children, Carolyn Raye, Geraldine Mae, David Allen, and Dale John.

Sylvia devoted her life to her family, friends, and community. She spent many years providing childcare in Malta and also ironing for many clients. Sylvia began working at the Malta Hospital approximately 1976, in the housekeeping and laundry departments until her health would no longer allow it. She enjoyed visiting, playing bingo and cards. She was most happy to spend her days fishing and camping. Sylvia also loved to sew. She dedicated herself to making clothes for her family. Her work was also evident in the many beautiful quilts she made over the years.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband Carl, mother & step-father Bud Baum, father & step-mother Berniece Schwarz, brother Larry Schwarz and infant grandson Scott Ferrell.

She is survived and loved by: daughters: Carolyn Ferrell and Geraldine Petersen of Malta, sons: David( Dawn) Kaasa of Havre and Dale Kaasa of Malta, MT; sisters Christine Leo of Harlem and Cynthia (Lonie) Lougheed of Clarkston, WA; brothers: Roger (Cece) Schwarz of Billings, Bill (Patty) Schwarz of Sheridan, MT, Dan (Julia) Schwarz of Dillion; 11 grandchildren: Lisa, Sarah, Sandra, Eric, Sam, Jennifer, Amy, Elizabeth, Azalea, Tristen, and Aidan, 7 great grandchildren: Rylan, Ireland, Alana, Cassius, Elin, Acacia, and Evita and several nieces and nephews.

She will be greatly missed by her family, her many friends, and all who knew her.

Her family would like to give a special thanks to the Hi Line Retirement Center's management and staff for the care and love they have provided her. Also a thank you to the staff at the Phillips County Medical facility and her physicians for all the wonderful care they have given her.

Thank you Sylvia for the hospitality (my first sleepover with Dale in ‘75!) and your kindness. My parents still remember your get well and Christmas cards from 30 years ago...they brought happiness during a difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My deepest sorrows and condolences to the Kaasa family during this hard time. I went and visited Sylvia every time I was in Malta visiting my grandma and we would always visit about family and how my grandma was doing. She was very loved and she will be forever missed!
